The judges were particularly impressed by his investigations into witchcraft within some African communities which exposed the horrific abuse suffered by children here and abroad.
Eddie Mairs interviewing is authoritative, incisive, well-researched, compelling and courteous. His distinctive on-air style demonstrates a careful use of irony. His political interviews in particular show tenacity and determination without becoming rude or aggressive.
Christian Fraser is a lively, fluent and gifted young reporter who is becoming a rising star. He is particularly good at putting over the atmosphere of events he reports. He also demonstrates a human warmth allowing him to tell stories in a serious way, while at the same time having a lightness of touch.
Peter Allen is an excellent story teller, always creating vivid radio pictures on the air. Well known for his on-air partnership with co-presenter Jane Garvey, the judges wanted, on this occasion, to recognise his live reporting skills - excellent descriptions and interviews which take listeners to the real heart of the story.
