Entries for the Sony Radio Academy Awards 2010 must have been broadcast on FM, AM, digital terrestrial, satellite or cable, streamed or made available for download between 01 January 2009 and 31 December 2009. The aim of these Awards is to celebrate programming that is primarily intended for UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man listeners.
Entries may be made by the following:
OFCOM (or similarly regulated) Licensed Radio Stations, BBC Production Units, Independent Production Organisations and BFBS. In the case of Satellite or Cable stations and Independent Production Companies/Independent Producers, it is imperative that you include a letter from the broadcaster with your submission, as proof of transmission.
In the case of streamed audio, downloads and podcasts the Awards Committee and the Academy recognise that such ventures are assuming an increasingly significant role alongside that of radio broadcasts. They are keen to encourage similar standards of excellence within this field, but believe that in such an unregulated environment different parameters will need to be applied.
STREAMED, PODCAST & DOWNLOAD SUBMISSIONS
• Streamed, PodCast and download entries can be made into any category, where appropriate. Please note: Internet Stations are invited to enter Digital Station Of the Year.
• For categories other than the dedicated Internet Programme of the Year award, simulcasts or edited versions of terrestrial broadcasts will not be eligible as judges are seeking to reward original content.
• The Internet Programme of the Year has separate criteria. Entrants should refer to the category listings page for specific submission requirements.
• In common with all other entries, the judges will be looking for evidence that the programme was primarily intended for UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man listeners.
• Submissions will only be judged from entrants functioning legally and conforming to the accepted standards of taste, decency and responsibility, to which licensed UK broadcasters are committed.
• In order to retain parity with broadcast radio entries, the judges will only be considering the Internet audio programming, and the permissible accompanying written submission material. In the case of interactive sites, or those containing graphics or other video elements, these elements will only be considered as supporting material.
• If third party copyrights (i.e. music or literary works or recordings not directly controlled by the webcast organisation itself) are included in the submitted programming, then entries must include firm evidence that the necessary rights have been obtained and the prerequisite agreements are in place. E.g.: copies of agreements with MCPS, PPL, PRS, AIM or the relevant copyright owner.
• Any entry submitted in association with a third party brand name must be accompanied by evidence of support from that organisation.
STATION OF THE YEAR ENTRIES
All stations entering Station of the Year are required to have been broadcasting for at least 12 months from 01 January 2009.
Submissions by RSLs and BBC World Service cannot be considered for a Station of the Year Award, but can be considered in all other categories. Internet Stations will only be considered for Digital Station of the Year.
No entry is required for category (E1) Station of the Year TSA: Under 300,000 as entrants for this category will be those selected as winners by the Radio Academy Nations & Regions Awards scheme.
Please e-mail: heather@radioacademy.org for further details.
SUBMITTING AN ENTRY
Entrants must complete their entry form and register it on-line, along with their audio on MP3 (up to 55 MB), before printing and collating it with their CD entry - only one CD with your signed entry form will be required.
Your entry form(s) will be emailed to you once registered, along with a summary of your entries, a checklist to guide you through collating your entry, CD & envelope label templates and your payment summary.
It is in your own interest to read the entry conditions, the what to do section and the Category descriptions in order to decide whether your submission is eligible, what materials you will need to support your entry and which category best suits your entry/entries.
Submission requirements vary for each category. Some categories will require compilations of various broadcasts, while others will require a continual broadcast on one particular show or feature - please read the submission information carefully. Judges reserve the right not to judge an entry if the submission requirements have not been met.
In all categories, judges will be seeking to reward the contribution made by radio practitioners, rather than the input of those whose contribution would have been just as impressive without a radio presence. For instance, the relay of an outstanding musical performance will not of itself deserve the judges' recognition. It is the added value that an imaginative radio producer might have brought to such a performance that will be examined.
If the production is in a language other than English, please enclose six copies of a printed English translation of your entire audio submission when sending in your entry. In cases where this applies, please be sure to advise the Secretariat. Tel: 020 7723 0106.
